However, despite the appeal, the price tag and time commitment may leave you second-guessing. Luckily, there are a number of ways to work in the medical field without needing a degree.

Medical Professional Jobs That Don’t Require A Degree

Here at Fast Chart, we know that working in medicine allows those to nurture their desire to help others while simultaneously making a living. The fast-paced, fast-growing industry is sure to keep you busy and constantly learning. The best part is, you don’t even need a degree! Here are 5 jobs that will put you in the heart of the medical field without needing a degree.

Medical Transcriptionist

Medical transcriptionists, in our opinion, are one of the best ways to work in the medical field without needing a degree. To become a medical transcriptionist, you need a high school diploma or your GED, and your medical transcriptionist certificate. This career can appeal to many individuals, such as storytellers or those who appreciate the risk of working in tedious environments. Additionally, being a medical transcriber is a great way to gain exposure to what it’s like to be a doctor who sees patients on a daily basis, without the degree.

EMTs And Paramedics

EMTs and paramedics respond to emergency calls when individuals are in need of medical services and transportation to a hospital. Both usually complete a postsecondary educational program. However, EMTs complete a course roughly 170 hours in length, while paramedics are required to complete 1,200 to 1,800 hours which can be 6-8 months long, that goes into greater detail and levels of care. Despite the amount of education, neither job requires a medical degree. Additionally, according to the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of EMTs and Paramedics is projected to grow 11% nationally from 2020-to 2030. These two jobs are a stable and sure way to be at the forefront of patient care.

Patient Care Technician

A college degree is not required to work as a PCT, yet you must obtain a PCT certification. You can take the patient care technician exam available through the National Healthcareer Association for additional education. The primary responsibilities of PCTs include:

  • Checking blood pressure, heart rate, and pulse
  • Oversee patient medication and food intake
  • Listening to patients’ concerns and reporting them to the nurse or doctor
  • Assist with turning, moving, or relocating patients for comfort or other medical diagnostic systems

A PCT often performs more functions than a certified nursing assistant but cannot provide the same level of care as a registered nurse who does require a college degree.

Pharmacy Technician

Being a pharmacy technician is another one of the ways to work in the medical field without needing a degree. Pharmacy technicians work in hospitals and pharmacies and help fill prescriptions and check medication inventory. A high school diploma or GED is generally required to become a pharmacy technician, and many will complete the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PCTE). Additionally, most techs will receive on-the-job training. This career is perfect for those who want to interact with patients but might not feel comfortable in a clinical role.

Phlebotomist

A phlebotomist’s primary duty is to draw a patient’s blood for use in medical/ clinical tests or even for transfusions and blood donations. Although no college degree is required to become a phlebotomist, it does involve completing an Accredited Phlebotomy Program and getting a Professional Phlebotomy Certification. Because having blood drawn is a rather unenjoyable experience, phlebotomists must also possess excellent interpersonal skills, as calming anxious patients is routine.
